Before you start

  • Measured net areas, crack dimensions or marking lengths/areas with units.
  • Current selected product document and quantity/application basis.
  • Your confirmed mix yield, allowance basis and actual purchase package sizes.

What you will finish with

  • A validated material estimate with supplied/mixed and unit labels.
  • A rounded purchase quantity and printable/exportable input/source record.
  • A record that can be carried into the bid and checked against actual usage.

Source note: sources below were checked as of October 11, 2026. Product revisions, local rules and your written quotes control the actual job. Unknown costs stay blank.

Choose the product, units and measured scope

Choose the product before entering a rate. The calculators do arithmetic with your supplied inputs; they do not select products or supply generic coverage defaults.

Manufacturer/version and quantity basis

Record manufacturer, exact formulation, document revision and source/date. Label whether the published quantity is supplied product, mixed application material, wet-film paint or another explicitly stated basis.

Site exclusions and uncertainty

Enter net treatment areas after deductions for islands, concrete, buildings and excluded/damaged surfaces. Save measurement provenance and unresolved field questions; a quantity estimate cannot diagnose the site.

User-entered loss and package sizes

Enter an allowance only when you have a stated reason and evidence, and record actual package size. Apply the allowance once and round only the final purchase order.

Sealer gallons by area and coat

Calculate each area/coat pair separately, then add them. The selected product controls the rate and the mix; no fixed gallons-per-area default is supplied.

Gallons/area versus area/gallon

For a rate in gallons per square foot: gallons = area × rate. For coverage in square feet per gallon: gallons = area ÷ coverage. A square yard equals 9 square feet; convert the basis explicitly before using a per-square-yard rate.

Mixed material versus purchased concentrate

Base mixed gallons = the sum of the documented area/coat quantities. Purchased concentrate = mixed gallons ÷ the documented mixed yield per gallon of concentrate. Keep units and basis visible; dilution cannot be assumed.

Water, sand and additives under the selected mix design

Calculate water, aggregate and additives only from the approved recipe, with each ingredient's own units. Do not treat solid aggregate volume as automatically interchangeable with measured mix yield.

Crack filler pounds by measured geometry

Use segment geometry, not length alone. A pounds-per-foot result applies only to its declared reservoir and overband dimensions.

Length, width, depth and density

Convert length, width and filled depth to the same units: reservoir volume = length × width × depth. Convert the total to gallons or cubic feet matching the product density, then weight = volume × density.

Separate overband volume

Overband volume = length × overband width × thickness, modeled separately above the surface. Add it to reservoir volume without counting the same volume twice.

Published yield cross-check and test section

Cross-check against a published product yield with matching geometry and a measured test section. Crafco's calculator shows length, width, depth and overband inputs; its product selection is not a universal density.

Striping paint and layout quantities

Keep line and filled-area takeoffs by color. A second machine pass and a second specified coat are different concepts; count the required material only once.

Line length/width

Marked line area = length in feet × width in inches ÷ 12. Add each line group separately so different widths are not averaged into an unexplained rate.

Stencils and marked surface area

Add stencil, arrow, crosswalk and filled-symbol areas to the appropriate color bucket. Record the actual design and measured area rather than an assumed symbol size.

Film build, passes and solids basis

Use TDS area-per-gallon at the specified film build, or verify physical wet-film volume. For entered wet thickness in mils: gallons = marked square feet × 144 × (mils ÷ 1,000) ÷ 231. NIST confirms 1 US liquid gallon equals 231 cubic inches. A dry-film calculation additionally requires the verified volume-solids basis.

Layout dimensions require an approved design

The layout record is a quantity and dimension worksheet, not an approved site plan or ADA compliance certificate. Obtain the approved design and verify signs, routes and slopes separately.

Liquid Road uses its own specified system

Use the separately labeled Liquid Road view and its product-specific planning page. Resolve the actual road/parking-lot system before using a rate or mix input.

Link to the product-specific calculator view

Record supplied and mixed quantities separately, with each confirmed coat area. If the confirmed system requires a preliminary high-traffic treatment, measure that area separately from the full-lot coats.

Unresolved document/coat differences prevent automatic defaults

Manufacturer landing and technical documents have unresolved application/coat differences. This guide has no manufacturer-confirmed current system, so it supplies no preset coat schedule, dilution, aggregate grading or coverage.

Read, export and verify the estimate

Read the full formula, inputs and exclusions alongside the result. An arithmetically valid answer can still be wrong if the product basis or site measurement is wrong.

Ranges and rounded orders

If the source provides a usable range, calculate low/high quantities from its same-scope endpoints and explain the basis. Round final orders by actual package size; do not round intermediate geometry or rates.

Carry inputs into the bid

Save or print product/source, revision/date, measurements, coat or segment inputs, mix basis, allowance, package and result. Carry the same record into the pricing worksheet, alongside delivered unit costs.

Compare actual usage

Record actual product, mix, coat areas and material use after the job. Explain differences from the estimate before changing future assumptions or an allowance.

A clearly labeled arithmetic example

These are arbitrary training inputs entered only to demonstrate arithmetic. They are not a measured job, product specification, coverage recommendation or industry rate. Replace every assumed product input with your confirmed specification before bidding.

Produce and verify a material estimate

  1. Identify the scope and product

Record site/job ID, measured net areas or geometry, product, source/revision and quantity basis.

  2. Enter compatible units and specifications

Use the selected rate, density, film build or documented mix yield with the calculator's labeled units.

  3. Review the readable calculation

Check every coat/segment/color, separate overband and supplied/mixed outputs, and verify excluded areas and unsupported inputs.

  4. Apply declared purchasing adjustments

Apply an entered allowance once and round the final order to the actual package size.

  5. Export and field-check

Keep the input/source record with the bid, cross-check a test area/section, and record actual usage after work.

Materials calculator

Use current manufacturer instructions for your exact product. All rates, allowances and package sizes are your inputs.

Approved mix components

Only from the selected mix design, per supplied gallon. Keep these components separate from the confirmed mixed yield.

Formula: sum of each coat area × its rate, plus specified partial-area treatment. Each coat uses net area unless you enter an override. Divide for area-per-gallon rates. If the specification rate is mixed material, divide application gallons by approved mixed yield for supplied gallons. If the rate is supplied product, application gallons are supplied gallons; multiply by yield for mixed gallons. Keep order basis separate. 1 sq yd = 9 sq ft.

Unit identities: NIST unit conversion tables, as of 2026-10-11. 1 US gallon = 231 cubic inches. Conversion constants do not establish product coverage. Excludes unsuitable pavement, unmeasured scope and material costs.

Frequently asked questions

Why do two sealers need different quantities?

Product formulation, application method, surface and published quantity basis differ. Use the selected product's current document and record its scope instead of assuming a universal rate.

Does the calculator show mixed gallons or purchased sealer?

Keep the selected basis visible. Mixed application gallons and purchased concentrate are separate outputs connected only by the entered documented mix yield.

How do coats change the estimate?

Calculate each coat on its own actual area and rate, then add the quantities. A partial treatment is not automatically a full-area coat.

Why can crack length alone give a poor estimate?

Weight depends on filled cross-section, overband where specified and product density. Length-only quantities hide geometry assumptions and can be misleading.

How do line width and paint film build affect gallons?

Wider lines increase marked area; film build changes required volume. Use coverage at the selected product's specified film thickness or a verified wet/dry calculation.

Does the layout tool prove ADA compliance?

No. It records quantities and dimensions for an approved design. Accessibility, signs, slopes, routes and local requirements need separate verification.

How much extra material should I order?

Use documented field evidence or an explicitly entered allowance with a reason, then round to package size. There is no unexplained default waste percentage or universal extra amount.

Can I save the inputs and sources with my bid?

Yes. Export or print the input/source record and keep it under the job ID with the bid. Preserve source revision/date and distinguish entered assumptions from observed measurements.
