Before you start

  • A selected trade/application scope and equipment list.
  • Current local equipment, vehicle, materials, registration and coverage quotes.
  • Your available cash, owned-asset condition and expected payment dates.

What you will finish with

  • Three operating scenarios with the same categories and declared assumptions.
  • A quote log showing gaps, delivered cost and owned assets.
  • A cash calendar and a scoped first-purchase decision.

Source note: sources below were checked as of October 11, 2026. Product revisions, local rules and your written quotes control the actual job. Unknown costs stay blank.

Compare the same cost categories at three operating levels

A side hustle, solo operation and crew have different schedules and support needs, but should be compared using the same categories. Enter your actual commitments instead of adopting a national startup figure.

Side hustle

Model the bookings and administration time available around other obligations. Include all tools, transport, storage, closure and product support necessary for those limited jobs.

Full-time solo

Model one trained operator's buying, preparation, travel, application, cleanup and customer duties. Confirm equipment capacity against that workload rather than an unsupported output rate.

Crew

Add actual payroll, training, supervision, support transport and cash timing. A second machine does not complete a crew budget.

Trade and workload assumptions

Record trade, product, application method, service area, job assumptions and customer collection timing for every scenario. Clearly mark entered assumptions and unquoted costs.

Bring in the selected equipment list from Tools you need

Transfer the selected items from Tools you need. Keep each item, source and compatibility record so changes do not disappear inside a package total.

Sealcoating

For sealcoaters, link the selected manual or spray system, mixing, transfer, preparation and closure equipment to the exact product and job scope.

Crack filling/sealing

For crack sealers, link the selected cold- or hot-applied system, compatible preparation, monitoring, support transport and model-specific parts.

Striping

For stripers, link the paint-compatible machine/tips, contracted stencils, layout/check tools, cleaning and closure plan.

Incremental Liquid Road setup

For Liquid Road, record confirmed compatible assets and quote only the additional equipment, training, material and working capital needed for the actual system.

Keep item selection separate from the full business budget

An equipment list answers which items enable the work. The full business budget also includes registration, coverage, administration, operating expenses and cash while customers have not paid.

Add costs supplier packages omit

Supplier bundles can be useful quote evidence, but their advertised amount is not the complete cost of opening and operating the business. Make missing items visible.

Vehicle/trailer, payload and storage

Check the actual loaded vehicle/trailer ratings, secure transport, registration, parking and storage. Quote required changes and record owned assets with their inspection and upkeep costs.

PPE, traffic control and maintenance

Include personal protective equipment (PPE), traffic/closure controls, spill provisions, manual-listed maintenance and required support. Treat safety requirements as part of the selected scope.

Registration, coverage quotes and initial marketing

Use official registration/permit fees and written licensed coverage quotes. Price the actual initial website, communications and marketing commitments instead of an arbitrary share of revenue.

Materials, payroll and receivables reserve

Place initial material orders, payroll and supplier payments beside customer receipts. Use a declared slower-payment scenario to see what cash is tied up; no universal reserve target is given.

Compare new, used, rented and subcontracted options

Compare the same usable capability and period. Condition, compatibility and support can change the cash commitment as much as the purchase label.

Condition and inspection

For used equipment, obtain a qualified inspection and history appropriate to the exact machine. Record required repair and missing components before comparing it with a working new configuration.

Compatibility, training and support

Confirm product compatibility, training, warranty/service terms, parts fit and availability. A lower listed purchase price without required accessories is not a comparable quote.

Finance terms and cash cost as separate views

Show cash purchase, financed payment timing and total financed cost separately. Use actual lender terms through the financing module; do not make a monthly payment look like the full equipment cost.

Read dated sourced ranges

No complete comparable three-tier equipment-and-business baskets have been retained for this guide. Unsupported startup totals and low/high ranges are omitted; the worksheet is ready for your actual sourced quotes.

Comparable basket low/high

Build low/high comparisons only from line items that perform the same selected scope. Identify each dated model/configuration, quantity, condition and supplier, then state remaining unquoted gaps.

Freight, tax and exclusions

Show freight, tax, accessories, training, service and exclusions separately. Record whether a number is a purchase price, rental for a stated period or subcontract scope.

Quote-only items and missing evidence

Quote-only or missing items stay unpriced with an assigned source task. A subtotal with unknown truck, coverage or material costs must be labeled incomplete rather than called a total startup budget.

Decide what to buy before the first booking

Buy only the documented capability needed for accepted work. Review the budget when actual jobs show a different bottleneck, usage or payment pattern.

Capacity constraints

Identify what limits the current operation: preparation, supply, trained people, transport, closure or application. More machine capacity is useful only when it addresses the actual constraint.

Minimum viable safe scope

Define a safe first scope that fits the skills, product, tools and cash confirmed so far. Decline work that depends on unverified equipment or unanswered requirements.

Update after actual jobs

Compare actual purchase, upkeep, material, hours, rework and collection timing with the scenario. Update assumptions and quotes before adding a crew, paver or winter service.

Assemble a sourced startup budget

  1. Define the operating scenarios

Choose trade, application, schedule, staffing and declared workload assumptions for part-time, solo and crew views.

  2. Transfer the equipment list

Include selected required items, confirmed owned assets and inspection/compatibility evidence.

  3. Collect complete quotes

Record dated model, quantity, condition, freight, tax, accessories, training, coverage and official fee evidence.

  4. Build the cash calendar

Separate startup purchases, recurring costs and working capital using actual payment and expected collection dates.

  5. Review gaps and decide scope

Label unquoted costs and incomplete subtotals; resolve required gaps before purchasing or accepting work.

Public tools

Use these without an account. Enter your own measurements and quotes. Save records on this device or export a copy for your job folder.

Trade and three-tier startup budget

All amounts are your inputs. Enter explicit zeros where appropriate. Leave missing quotes blank; no national range is supplied.

Equipment + vehicle/storage + setup + initial materials = cash to start. Keep recurring costs and working capital separate. Exclude safely reusable owned assets explicitly. Save/export each trade and operating level; compare matched baskets. A supplier package is not a total startup budget.

Frequently asked questions

What changes between side-hustle, solo and crew budgets?

The schedule, labor, supervision, equipment and support commitments change. Compare them with identical categories and declared workload assumptions rather than treating package names as complete budgets.

What do supplier packages leave out?

Check transport/storage, safety and closure equipment, permits/registration, coverage, training, maintenance, administration, initial materials and working capital. Read the package's actual inclusions and exclusions.

Can I use a truck and tools I already own?

Yes, after confirming condition, product compatibility, safe loaded transport and the booked scope. Record inspection, maintenance and required changes rather than treating ownership as proof of fitness.

Should I buy used equipment or rent?

Compare usable capability, inspection/repair, availability, training, support and total cost for your entered work volume. No fixed discount for used equipment is assumed.

How much working capital belongs in the budget?

Use the cash calendar to model actual supplier, payroll and operating payments before customer receipts, including declared delay scenarios. No supported universal cash-reserve range is published.

How do I compare prices from different suppliers?

Request the same model/configuration or verified equivalent scope and list freight, tax, accessories, training and exclusions. Preserve dated sources so unlike bundles are not presented as a range.

What equipment needs checking before adding Liquid Road?

Confirm the actual product/system and tank/agitation, aggregate handling, transfer/application equipment, operator training and loaded transport. Manufacturer confirmation is needed before counting existing assets as compatible.
