The short answer
They work well for paying people you know, as long as you lock down your account and don't leave money sitting in the app. Zelle moves money straight between bank accounts and offers no purchase protection, so pay only people you know and trust. Venmo, Cash App and X Money can hold a balance, and an app isn't a bank. If money ever leaves your account without your OK, report it to your bank right away.
Bank to bank or app wallet
| App | How it works | Moving money to your bank |
|---|---|---|
| Zelle | Bank to bank, inside your bank's app (its standalone app shut down April 1, 2025). No purchase protection | The money is already in a bank account |
| Venmo | Holds a balance in the app | Instant: 1.75% (min $0.25, max $25). Standard: free, 1–3 business days |
| PayPal | Holds a balance in the app | Instant: 1.75% (min $0.25, max $25). Standard: free |
| Cash App | Holds a balance in the app | Instant: 0.5%–2.5%. Standard: free |
| X Money | Open to eligible U.S. adults; terms vary by subscription tier and state. X Payments LLC isn't a bank; deposits are held at Cross River Bank (Member FDIC) | Check the current terms in the app |
Deposit insurance applies only once your money sits at an insured bank, and only if that bank fails. So move app balances to your bank, and use the free standard transfer when you can wait a few days.
Example: Marcus moves $600 from Venmo every week with the instant transfer. At 1.75%, that's $10.50 each time, or $315 over a 30-week season. The standard transfer would have cost nothing.
If money leaves without your OK
Speed matters. If your debit card or PIN was lost or stolen, report it within 2 business days of finding out and federal rules cap your loss at $50. Wait longer and it can reach $500. If your card wasn't lost or stolen, report a transfer you didn't make within 60 days after the statement showing it is sent, and you won't owe it. Miss that window and you risk losing what's taken after it. Report it to your bank and in the app.
It's different if you were tricked into sending the money yourself. Once you send money to a scammer, it's hard to get back, and Zelle offers no purchase protection. Call your bank right away anyway, contact the app, and report the scam to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Depositing checks with your phone
- Endorse the check the way your bank asks. Some require words such as "For mobile deposit only" under your signature.
- Know your limit and your hold. For many check deposits, federal rules make the first $275 available the next business day, but mobile deposits follow your bank's own rules.
- Keep the paper check somewhere safe until the deposit has fully cleared.
- Money showing in your account doesn't prove a check is good. A fake check can take weeks to discover, and then you owe the bank the money back.
Side-job money through apps
Payment apps must send a Form 1099-K if you get more than $20,000 and more than 200 transactions in a year. Some states set a lower bar. Income below that is still taxable, form or not (lesson P101.2).
A friend paying you back for a concert ticket generally isn't taxable and shouldn't show up on a 1099-K. A customer paying you for a driveway is income. Keep side-job payments separate from personal ones, for example in their own app account, so your records stay clean at tax time.
Your Move
Do this week
- In every money app and your bank app, turn on two-step login (multi-factor authentication) and set a PIN or lock.
- Move any app balance to your insured bank account with the free standard transfer.
- Next time you cash out, pick standard over instant unless you need the money today.
- Save your bank's fraud phone number and each app's help page in your phone.
Log it: Apps locked down.
Common questions
Is money in my Venmo or Cash App balance FDIC-insured?
Not automatically. Apps aren't banks. Deposit insurance applies only once money sits at an insured bank, and only if that bank fails. Move it to your bank.
Can I get my money back if I paid a scammer with Zelle?
Maybe not. Zelle offers no purchase protection. Call your bank right away and report it to the FTC. If someone got into your account and sent money without your OK, that's an unauthorized transfer: report it right away, and no later than 60 days after the statement showing it is sent.
Will Cash App report my side-job income?
It must send a 1099-K above $20,000 and more than 200 transactions in a year. Some states set a lower bar. The income is taxable either way.
Watch out for
- Anyone you don't know asking to be paid by Zelle or another app.
- A text or call about a "refund" or a problem with your account that asks you to send money or read back a code. Hang up and call the number on your card.
- An overpayment. A buyer or customer pays more than the price and asks you to send back the difference. The payment can bounce after your money is gone.
- A prize you have to pay a fee to collect.
