Outline

  1. Asphalt Sealer (sealcoating)

Mixed with silica sand and squeegeed or sprayed. It protects and darkens the surface. It is not crack filler.

  2. Crack Sealant

Rubberized material for long, working cracks. It stays elastic. The glossary aims it at cracks that move, including transverse cracks.

  3. Crack Filler

For random cracks that move less, often on lots. The glossary says these are usually not rubberized.

  4. Asphalt Sealing Additives

Job-site additions. Some cut power-steering marks. Others help sand stay up or change dry time. Only what the mix design allows.

  5. Pothole Patch

Cold mix for a hole with defined edges, from about a half inch deep to a couple of inches. The glossary names PatchMaster as an all-weather example.

  6. Asphalt Binder

In this glossary, a tack used to prime oxidized pavement just before a patch. It is not the same word as the binder inside hot mix.

  7. Oil Spot Primers

Applied on oil and grease so those spots do not bleed through a fresh seal.

  8. Squeegee Machine or Sealer Buggy

A ride-on with agitation and rubber squeegees that push sealer down into the pavement.

  9. Spray Tanks

Agitated trailer or skid units that spray sealer onto the top of the rock. Different film than a squeegee coat.

  10. Heated Asphalt Distributor

Heats and sprays emulsions, rejuvenators, and tack. Trailer or skid. Not a crack kettle.

  11. Heated Hose Machine

A trailer that heats crack sealant and keeps the hose hot so the material still flows at the crack.
